***: The Alamo, originally known as Misión San Antonio de Valero, was established in the 18th century as a mission and fortress compound. It is most famous for the Battle of the Alamo in 1836, an epic conflict during the Texas Revolution where a small group of Texan defenders held out against a much larger Mexican army for 13 days. Although the defenders were ultimately defeated, "Remember the Alamo" became a rallying cry for Texan independence, which was achieved later that year. Today, the Alamo is a museum and a symbol of Texan identity, visited by millions annually, drawn by its dramatic history and its role in American folklore.
